Worms and People

Did you know, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year 3 to 6 million Americans are infected with roundworm larvae?6 In most cases, the transmission of zoonotic parasites occurs through accidental oral ingestion of parasite eggs from a contaminated environment, from accidental ingestion of an infected flea, or by penetration of the skin by parasite larvae. Some implications of zoonotic disease include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Skin Irritation and Rashes
  • Neurological Disease
  • Blindness
  • Liver and Lung Damage
  • Death

Keep in mind that most cases of parasitic zoonosis occur from exposure to contaminated environments, not from everyday activities with pets.  If you suspect that you or any one in your family is exhibiting symptoms of zoonotic disease, please consult your physician immediately.
